Unagi Kabayaki: Smoky, Sweet, and Iconically Japanese

Unagi kabayaki is one of the cornerstones of Japanese comfort food, and it's a dish we're proud to serve. Freshwater eel is butterflied, skewered, and grilled, then glazed with a tare sauce made from soy, mirin, sugar, and sake, before a final grilling gives it that glossy finish and deep umami flavor.

Unagi has long held a special place in Japanese culture, traditionally eaten on Doyo no Ushi no Hi (the Midsummer Day of the Ox) for stamina.

How We Serve It

Our Una Don features grilled unagi kabayaki over steamed white rice, with extra tare sauce and sansho pepper on the side, warm, satisfying, and deeply nostalgic.

Our Unagi Handroll takes it in a more casual direction: a crispy nori cone filled with rice and unagi, easy to eat and great with a cold drink.

Unagi kabayaki is a true izakaya classic, rich and sweet with a hint of smokiness, and a natural match for sake or shochu.
