At Izakaya Juraku, we love reimagining classics through the lens of Japanese flavors. One of our signature drinks returning this fall is the Hojicha Old Fashioned, a bold yet balanced cocktail that feels both familiar and refreshingly new.

A Nod to Tradition, with a Juraku Twist

The Old Fashioned is one of the oldest cocktails in history: simple, spirit forward, and elegant. Last year, we introduced our first version featuring Sato Shiki Single Grain Whisky and a gentle infusion of roasted green tea, or hojicha. The earthy, nutty aroma of hojicha gave the drink a comforting Japanese touch.

This year, we pushed it further.

The 2025 Edition: Subtle Smoke Meets Roasted Tea

The new Hojicha Old Fashioned layers complexity with just a mist of Laphroaig 10 Year Scotch. Known for its intense peaty smoke, Laphroaig can overwhelm on its own, but here it is used sparingly to introduce a whisper of herbal smokiness that complements the toasted character of hojicha without overpowering it.

The result is a cocktail that is warming, aromatic, and perfect for crisp fall evenings.
