Amami Kakuto Shochu: Sweet, Smooth, and Island Spirit

Japan's shochu world is huge and varied, and kokuto shochu is one of its more unique corners, a brown sugar-based spirit that can only be made in the Amami Islands of Kagoshima Prefecture.

What Is Kokuto Shochu?

Kokuto shochu is distilled from brown sugar, but it isn't sweet like a liqueur. Production is restricted to the Amami Islands, and regulations require rice koji as the fermentation starter. The result is light, smooth, and subtly aromatic, with gentle sweetness, low calories, and real versatility at the table.

About This Bottle

Amami Kakuto Shochu has soft notes of molasses, roasted grain, and a touch of floral character. It's smooth and clean on the palate with slight warmth, and the finish is refreshing with a mineral edge from the local water. Try it oyuwari (with hot water), mizuwari (with cold water), or on the rocks.

How We Serve It

On the rocks, with soda, or alongside grilled meats, fried dishes, and even dessert. It's mellow and easy-drinking, which makes it a good entry point for shochu newcomers and a satisfying pour for longtime fans.
